HFD gives out some fireworks safety tips and regulations

With the Fourth of July just on the horizon, and with this being a big year with the 250th birthday of the United States to celebrate, officials are reminding folks on fireworks regulations and safety tips.

The Hopkinsville Fire Department and EMS clarified the City of Hopkinsville ordinance regarding fireworks, which includes that firework cannot be ignited within 200 feet of any structure, vehicle or other person, they can’t be ignited or discharged from or toward a motor vehicle, they cannot be discharged on someone else’s property without their consent and they cannot be discharged on public property.

The ordinance states that fireworks may only be used July 1 through July 5 and December 31 through January 1 between the hours of 10 a.m. and 12:30 a.m.

EMS officials encouraged folks to not let children let fireworks without adult supervision, don’t shoot fireworks at other people or animals—or really anywhere rather than up into the sky—and always soak used fireworks in a bucket of water before disposing of them. This is to fully extinguish any left over reactive chemicals and get rid of any smoldering embers that might remain.
