Woman charged in Elkton in relation to theft from deceased man’s home

A woman is facing theft charges after she allegedly stole from a deceased man’s home in Elkton.

According to the Elkton Police Department, Captain Jakop Smith and Officer Stayce Player responded to Harvest Moon Apartments in Elkton on January 29 for reports of a deceased subject. The man’s caretaker had reported him deceased from apparent natural causes, and upon arrival, the deceased was located in the apartment.

On February 11, officers were informed by family that items were missing from the home.

Investigation determined that the caretaker, 67-year-old Maggie Bellamy-Beard, had allegedly taken items—including a wallet—from the apartment after discovering the deceased.

Bellamy-Beard was charged on Wednesday with theft by unlawful taking and tampering with physical evidence.

The investigation remains on going, with further charges pending.

The Elkton Police Department was assisted by Todd County Deputy Coroner Mike Tino-Cunniffe.
