University Heights Academy will have a pair of tennis players who will play in the KHSAA State Tennis Tournament.
Second seed Stephen Whitecotton advanced to the Boys’ Region 2 Tennis Tournament championship match Friday night as he defeated Henderson County’s Jaxton Duncan in a three-set thriller.
Duncan won the first set 10-2 before Whitecotton rallied to take the second set 6-2. The UHA star then outlasted Duncan 10-7 in the third set to reach the finals.
In the championship match, Whitecotton faced top seed Simone Amadoria, of Fort Campbell. Amadoria reached the finals with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Madisonville-North Hopkins’ Caleb Tagg in the semifinals.
Whitecotton’s legs may have been heavy after his semifinal match as he fell 6-2, 6-1 to Amadoria.
Meanwhile, in the Girls’ Region 2 Tennis Tournament, UHA’s Allie Sandifer fell to top seed Kiley DeMoss in the semifinals, 6-2, 6-1.
DeMoss went on to defeat Webster County’s Josie Cardwell 6-0, 6-0 in the championship.
The boys’ doubles championship was a thriller with Madisonville’s Larkins/Heath holding off Madisonville’s Mays/Pinkerton 9-11, 6-2, 10-8 for the title.
In the girls’ doubles title match, Hopkins County Central’s Lilly Armour/Avery Adams defeated Cadence Curry/Addyson Raymer, of Madisonville, 6-3, 6-3.
The top four singles and doubles teams advance to the Sectional on May 20 at South Warren High School.
The Region 2 Tennis Team Tournament will be played Monday afternoon at Ruff Park.
