This week’s Jennie Stuart Orthopedic – Michael Venable State Farm Player of the Week is Cadence Gibson.
Cadence is a sophomore at University Heights Academy and a member of the Blazer baseball team.
Gibson is currently tied for the most hits on the team with 22, has a .338 batting average, and has 11 stolen bases which is also tied for first on his team this season.
Cadence has also spent some time pitching this season and recently had a solid performance on the hill in a 5-2 region win against Henderson Co.
In the win, he pitched a complete game allowing two hits and one earned run, while retiring four batters and walking two.
As far as his baseball beginnings, Cadence says it started with him playing tee ball around the age of 5.
He credits teammates and the fun of winning for why he’s continued to play.
This is Cadence’s first year at UHA after transferring from Madisonville-North Hopkins.
However, Cadence has played with a lot of Blazers on his summer team and was also coached by UHA’s head coach Scott Gentry.
Gibson talked about the summer and how he was able to build chemistry with his future high school teammates.
As far as improvements over the summer, Gibson says he really tried to improve his hitting from last season.
He went on to share the details on what he did to improve.
While baseball has been and still is his main athletic focus, Cadence decided to play for the soccer team this past fall.
He described the advantages from playing soccer that he has seen on the diamond.
For Cadence, even though he’s joined a new team this season, he didn’t come alone.
His younger brother Courtland came with him and has had a great season as well in their first season donning the green and gold.
Courtland plays catcher for the team, and with Cadence seeing some time on the mound, he was asked what kind of chemistry he feels when pitching to his brother behind the plate.
For this season, Gibson says his main goal is for his team to make a good run in the district and region tournament.
When asked what he and his team will need to do to achieve that goal this was his response.
Lastly, Cadence shared his favorite thing about playing the sport of baseball.
