Trial date set in 2019 Short Bethel Street murder case

A new trial date was set Wednesday in Christian Circuit Court in the murder case against Shakkory Willis, the man accused in the 2019 fatal shooting death of Corvyan Thomas.

Willis—who is currently serving a 33-year sentence in a state prison for first-degree robbery, first-degree burglary and second-degree unlawful transaction with a minor—is represented by defense attorney Eric Bearden, who informed the court that they were unable to come to a resolution for the murder charge.

So, Judge John Atkins set it for trial to begin on March 14, 2024, with a final pretrial hearing set for February 5.

Willis was found guilty of those three charges for his role in relation to a robbery on Short Bethel Street in 2019 that ended with Thomas dead and Dylan Stewart shot in the leg.

A jury found Willis guilty on those charges, but was unable to come to a unanimous verdict on the murder charge, resulting in a mistrial.
