The Hopkinsville Tigers may not have won the game that mattered most, but they did exact a little revenge by defeating the host Christian County Colonels 52-41 Friday night in a boys’ high school basketball game.
The Colonels (4-15) defeated the Tigers 73-69 two weeks ago in Tiger Gym in a District 8 seeding game.
But Friday, Hoptown Coach Anthony Babb’s Tigers made sure that didn’t happen again.
The Tigers (8-12) jumped out to a 13-8 lead after one quarter and behind the play of Layton Giltner, James Bradley Jr., and Jonovan Leavell, they pushed the lead to 29-18 at halftime.
Hopkinsville kept the pressure on in the third quarter, taking an 18-point lead midway through the period.
DeAvery Ramey scored nine of his 11 points in the second half, including making nine of 12 free throws to lead the Tigers.
Christian County drew within 49-39 late, but the Colonels were cold down the stretch and Hopkinsville sealed the win from the free throw line.
The Colonels struggled at the free throw line, making only 8 of 25 attempts. Meanwhile, Hoptown was 14 of 24 from the charity stripe.
Hopkinsville also did a good job defensively on the Colonels’ top scorers, Na’Darien Rowe and Rahsean Stevenson. Rowe, who had 29 points against the Tigers on Jan. 9, only had six points Friday. Stevenson, who averages 11.5 points, finished with four points.
Ramey finished with 11 points to lead the Tigers. Giltner and Leavell each had 10.
Zyon Wharton led the Colonels with 10 points.
Hopkinsville was scheduled to play Crittenden County Saturday night at Tiger Gym, but the game was canceled Friday after the Crittenden County girls’ team advanced to the All “A” Classic Semifinals on Saturday.
Christian County will play Calloway County, which is ranked No. 6 in the latest RPI, at 5 p.m. Saturday at Trigg County’s Wildcat Gym in the Chappel Allen Shootout. The F&M Bank Pregame Show will air at 4:45 p.m. on 95.3 The Farm.
