Coaches and some players from the Hopkinsville and Christian County high school football teams were at a media day event Saturday morning at the Planters Bank-Jennie Stuart Health Sportsplex.
Hopkinsville is coming off a 3-7 season and missed the playoffs for the second straight season. The Tigers are moving to Class 6-A this season and will play in District 1 with McCracken County, Henderson County, and Christian County.
Hoptown coach Dustin Lopez said he likes that his team has more time to develop and prepare for the district games later in the season.
Hopkinsville will scrimmage Paducah Tilghman and Clarksville Northeast on Aug. 8 and will follow that a week later with a scrimmage at Mayfield.
Lopez said he hopes to learn more about his team from those scrimmages.
Lopez said he likes his team, but he is interested to see how they develop in the next few weeks.
Meanwhile, Christian County coach Ethan Atchley brings a young team to the 2025 season. He said a large and talented freshman group will be counted on heavily to help the Colonels this season.
Atchley said this year’s Colonels’ squad is ahead of last year’s team, which finished the year 1-10 and lost in the first round of the playoffs.
Christian County had several key players transfer out, but senior Tom Johnson has returned to play quarterback after missing his junior season. With improvement to the offensive line and the return of several other key offensive players, Atchley said the passing game also is ahead of last year.
Christian County opens the season Aug. 24 at home against Clarksville Northeast. Hoptown opens its season Aug. 23 at home against Nashville Stratford.
