School Board approves Early Learning Center expansion project

The Christian County School Board approved a project application for the expansion of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Early Learning Center as well as construction change orders for the consolidated high school at their Thursday meeting.

Before the meeting was called to order high school students were awarded for their participation in the commemorative t-shirt design contest. Students were tasked with designing shirts for Christian County and Hopkinsville high schools as well as Gateway Academy.

District Communications Director Johnna Brown says the top three designs for each school were spotlighted. The first-place designs are set to be put on t-shirts to celebrate and honor the schools which are set to close once the consolidated high school opens for the 2026-27 school year.

Construction on the high school continues on schedule and Brown says a lot of the work is taking place inside of the building. The board approved four change orders which included increases and deductions, but overall, the changes resulted in an increase of around $14,000.

The changes include the deduction of trench rock from the greenhouse, the addition of plumbing to the greenhouse and the installation of electrical infrastructure.

The board also approved a project application to expand the early learning center. The center opened in August 2024 and was established at the old Indian Hills Elementary School campus. Brown says not all classrooms can be used yet because they haven’t been equipped to accommodate the county’s youngest learners.

In the expansion, 11 classrooms are set to be renovated which will include new paint, flooring, ceiling tiles, doors and restrooms. Classroom furniture will also be purchased. The expansion is set to cost around $400,000 and will be funded by a partnership between the district and Jennie Stuart Health.
