October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month and regional nonprofit Sanctuary, Inc. invites the community to multiple events highlighting the resources and support available for domestic violence survivors.
Sanctuary operates in the Pennyrile Region and provides support and resources for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault. Nonprofit Executive Director Heather Lancaster recently appeared on WHOP to share what they have planned for the month.
The events started with the “Speak My Name” presentation at Friday’s Christian County High School football game. Lancaster says the presentation remembered those in Kentucky who died as a result of domestic violence.
Then on October 15, Hopkinsville Mayor J.R. Knight and Christian County Judge Executive Jerry Gilliam will sign a proclamation recognizing October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Along with the declaration, Lancaster says they will unveil Sanctuary’s new vision statement.
The proclamation will be read at 5:45 p.m. before Hopkinsville City Council’s meeting at the Municipal Building.
Continuing next week, Sanctuary is hosting Tea and Talk which will focus on healing on October 17 at Milkweed Health & Harmony Emporium. Lancaster says healing looks different for everyone and they will spotlight how Sanctuary can support survivors through that journey.
Those interested in attending must RSVP by calling Milkweed ahead of the event.
Then moving to Elkton, on October 22 Sanctuary will host a presentation about self-care. For those who are coping with trauma, Lancaster says focusing on self-care can be the first step toward healing.
Purple also spotlights domestic violence awareness, and Lancaster invites the community to wear purple on Wednesdays. Sanctuary is selling purple shirts with the phrase, “Empower Survivors” and the funds will support the nonprofit’s mission.
