Gavin Powell delivered a two-run single in the top of the seventh inning and the Hopkinsville Tigers defeated Choctaw, Fla., 8-7 Tuesday night in a high school baseball game in Fort Walton, Fla.
Hoptown grabbed a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning taking advantage of a walk, an error and a single by Andrew Mayes.
Choctaw tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the frame.
Hopkinsville took a 4-2 advantage in the top of the fourth inning as Dylan Sweeney had a RBI single and Chase Fort’s sacrifice bunt scored Aiden King.
However, the Indians pushed four runs across the plate in the bottom of the frame for a 6-4 lead before the Tigers struck again for two runs in the top of the fifth.
The Tigers had two players hit by a pitch and took advantage of a walk and a RBI single by Fort to tie the game at 6-6.
Powell gave Hoptown an 8-6 advantage in the top of the seventh but Choctaw scored once before Powell was able to retire the last two batters and secure the win.
Mayes picked up the pitching win, going six innings, strikng out seven and allowing only one earned run.
Hopkinsville improved to 3-3 on the season and is scheduled to play Talawanda, Ohio and Louisville Male today.
