Lily Hughes and Heather Winkler were announced as the winners of the Pennyroyal Arts Council’s 2025 Barbara Gardner Art Award.
The award honors Barbara Gardner who passed away in 2021 and spotlights her commitment to the arts. Gardner was a self-employed artist and art teacher and was a member of the Hopkinsville Art Guild.
The council shared that both award recipients exemplify artistic promise, dedication to diversity and a commitment to the power of art.
Hughes is the student recipient and uses art to create stories with plans to create her own original series. Hughes says the award will help her buy supplies to create more art and further her education.
Winkler is the educator recipient and works as an art teacher at Sinking Fork Elementary School. Winkler says she is committed to creating an inclusive and inspiring environment where all students can see themselves reflected in the curriculum and feel empowered to express themselves in their art.
