Daviess County played spoiler for the Christian County Colonels’ “Senior Night” basketball game as the Panthers clawed their way to a 73-55 victory Saturday afternoon at Lyle Dunbar Gym.
The Colonels honored senior players Kam Williams and Na’Darien Rowe along with the senior cheerleaders and managers before the game. But the Panthers quickly put an end to the party.
Led by the play of senior guard Jaxon Brown, Daviess County jumped out to a quick 8-0 lead and never looked back.
The Panthers led 24-8 after one quarter and pushed their lead to 35-17 at halftime.
Brown had 13 of his 20 points and Jonathan Moss had 10 of his 22 points in the first half.
Meanwhile, turnovers and cold shooting continued to plague the Colonels, who saw their regular season end at 6-22.
Rowe and Williams got hot in the third quarter and helped Christian County get within 13 points midway through the period. But the Panthers answered with a quick 8-0 spurt to grab their biggest lead of 21 points.
Rowe led the Colonels with 17 points, including 12 in the second half. Williams finished with 12 points, eight of which came in the second half.
Zyon Wharton also had a big second half with all 12 of his points coming in the final two quarters.
Daviess County improved to 20-6 on the year and also had 14 points from 6-foot-7 center DeAaron Watkins and 10 points from Joseph Varble.
Christian County returns to action Tuesday night in the District 8 semifinals against University Heights Academy at 7 p.m. at Hopkinsville High School. The Blazers defeated the Colonels 68-56 in their only meeting this season.
