Officials warn of scams as tornado recovery continues

Officials in Montgomery County are putting out a warning about possible scams going around as work continues to clean up and recover from last weekend’s tornadoes.

Unfortunately, scams follow after natural disasters, where scammers are looking to make a quick dollar off of those who are looking for help, including insurance scams, contractor fraud such as tree removal, roof repair or disaster relief charity scams. Officials are reminding citizens to never give out any personal information, especially over the phone.

When selecting a for-hire service, contact the Better Business Bureau to verify their validity, take some extra time to double check references, verify and document the individual’s identity, require written contracts and document every part of the process.

If you’re looking to donate to help with relief efforts, make sure you’re donating to a well-known and established entity.

For more information, or if you believe you have been victim of a scam, contact the Todd County Sheriff’s Department, the Clarksville Police Department or the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Department.Â
