Officials urge caution on area roadways after winter weather

Area roadways in Christian and surrounding counties remain slick Monday thanks to snow overnight Sunday, and local officials are urging people to use caution if they must get out.

Thanks to the frigid temperatures that aren’t set to budge for several days, what snow that did fall will also stick around, so if the road is not cleared, it will likely stay snow covered. Christian County Sheriff’s Department Public Information Officer Chris Miller says the frigid temperatures are the real problem—anything that does somehow melt will only refreeze, and many roads that look clear are deceptive.

He says pretreating of roads with salt and brine can only do so much in these extremely cold temperatures, and road crews are working as fast as they can to clear what they can.

Miller says one thing you don’t want to do is be stuck on the side of the road waiting for help in temperatures like this—so if you must go out, make sure to take it plenty slow and pack a kit full of supplies, just in case.

Roads such as the Pennyrile Parkway and Eagle Way Bypass have had some clearing, but Miller says don’t be fooled by them, as black ice could still be present. Secondary roads are still covered and will probably stay that way until crews can reach them.
