A Hopkinsville police officer was taken to Jennie Stuart Medical Center for treatment on Saturday after he was reportedly bitten by a dog on West Second Street.
Few details were immediately available, but a police report states that an officer with HPD spotted dogs running at large near the police department, and followed the dogs while radioing for animal control to come help.
He followed the dogs until they returned to where they lived, and when the officer tried to make contact with the owners, that’s when he was reportedly bitten. The officer then fired at least two shots, according to Public Information Colette Marfil, killing the dog—the breed of the dog was not listed on the report.
The officer sustained moderate injuries to his hand and was taken to Jennie Stuart for treatment. Investigation determined the dog was no up-to-date on its rabies shot.
The owner of the dog, Shirley Shelton, was charged with dogs running at large, harboring a vicious animal and dogs to be vaccinated against rabies.
