Motions denied, trial date set in Oak Grove murder case

It was a busy day in Christian Circuit Court for murder suspect Oziya Narcisse Thursday morning, as he had two motions denied and a trial date was set for next year.

Narcisse is accused in the fatal shooting death of Isaiah McCoy in Oak Grove that occurred earlier this year, and he appeared alongside public defender Doug Moore, who had filed a motion for bond reduction and a motion to have the indictment against Narcisse dismissed. He argued previously that the original indictment was defective, and he feels a superseding indictment that has since been filed doesn’t meet the requirements of juvenile court, as Narcisse is 17.

Moore argued that his client would not be a flight risk and has shown great behavior while held in a juvenile detention facility. The victim’s mother, however, disagreed when she took the stand to testify against reducing Narcisse’s bond. She says her family is still grieving the loss of her son, and she worries not only for the safety of the community and her family if he was released, but also for Narcisse himself.

Things became heated as Moore asked several questions, which Commonwealth’s Attorney Mark Gilbert objected to. Moore clarified that he believes Narcisse may have acted in self-defense, while Gilbert interjected that Narcisse is clearing a flight risk based on his actions the night of the shooting.

Ultimately, Judge John Atkins denied the motion for a reduction in bond, saying he believes the $100,000 cash bond to be appropriate. He also went on to deny the motion to dismiss the indictment, saying he believes the superseding indictment is adequate.

Then, the judge went ahead and set a trial date set to begin on July 28, with a pretrial conference set for June 11.
