Men 2 Be to host forums discussing the future of Attucks High School

Men 2 Be is working to revitalize Crispus Attucks High School and transform it into a community center, and to share their vision for the school, the nonprofit is hosting a series of public forums.

Men 2 Be was established in 2020 and works to uplift boys in the community by supporting them academically and teaching them life and social skills.

Attucks High School was built in 1916 and was Hopkinsville’s first public school for Black students. The school is named after Crispus Attucks, a sailor of African and Native American descent who was killed in the Boston Massacre in 1770. The school became an integrated middle school in 1967 before closing in 1988. Since then, it has been inducted into the National Register of Historic Places.

The nonprofit is preparing to host three forums starting this upcoming Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Pioneers Complex at 904 North Main Street. LaDessa Lewis the co-founder of Men 2 Be says the first forum will focus on the history and the significance of the school. Alumni from the school will also be in attendance.

The second forum will be at 10 a.m. on February 21 at Hopkinsville Community College’s Emerging Technologies Building. At this meeting, members of Men 2 Be will share their revitalization plans for the school and will also ask for the community’s ideas and opinions.

Then the final forum will be at 10 a.m. on March 21 at Christian County Middle School’s Performing Arts Center. Lewis says this meeting will focus on ways to empower local youth and how the revitalization of the school could play a role.
