A Hopkinsville man has been charged with second-degree assault following an incident on East Seventh Street last week.
According to the Hopkinsville police report, officers responded to the 1400 block of East Seventh around 9:30 p.m. for reports of an individual who had been hit in the head. The victim had reportedly gotten into an altercation with 30-year-old Rick Romig of Hopkinsville and an address on Butler Road.Â
The victim left and went to his residence on East Seventh Street, where Romig showed up later. The victim told officers he had been punched earlier, so when Romig went to shake his hand, he grabbed a hammer just in case he needed to protect himself and told Romig to leave.
That’s when Romig allegedly struck him in the face before fleeing the scene. The victim had an obvious wound to the face and was covered in blood.
Romig reportedly told officers he had been trying to protect his loved ones and knew the victim fell into a ditch but didn’t know how his face became injured.
Romig was arrested and charged with second-degree assault.
