Local YMCA hosts Welcoming Week to spotlight different cultures

It’s Welcoming Week at the Hopkinsville-Christian County YMCA, and folks are invited to learn about and celebrate the cultures that make up the community.

Welcoming Week is an initiative taking place at YMCA facilities across the country to spotlight a variety of cultures and create a more inclusive environment. The initiative runs from September 12 to September 21 and YMCA Membership Director Norma LaFoy and Child Watch Coordinator Emma Tuggle appeared on WHOP to talk about they have planned.

On Monday morning, Lafoy says they served Mexican spiced coffee and Pan Dulce, a Mexican sweet bread.

Folks are invited to get their groove on with some line dancing at noon on Tuesday. Then on Wednesday, Lafoy says they will be hosting a Community Potluck and Cultural Showcase at 11:45 a.m. People are encouraged to prepare a dish that is culturally significant to them, talk about its importance and also share recipes.

At the potluck, Lafoy says Mona Sheth will be leading a cooking demonstration for a traditional Indian dish.

Then line dancing comes back on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. and the week concludes on Friday with an all-day flag trivia game for the chance to win a prize. The Welcome Week will also be a chance for people to learn more about the local YMCA.

For parents who want to go to the YMCA to work out, Tuggle says they have a childcare program. The program is available Monday through Friday and Tuggle says parents can drop off their kids while they work out and staff host activities to keep them engaged.

Monday also marks the start of the YMCA’s Fellowship and Enrichment Program which provides tutoring for students from kindergarten to twelfth grade. Lafoy says the program runs on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday and is available to non-members.

More information about upcoming YMCA events is available at Hopkinsville Family YMCA on Facebook.
