To celebrate Women’s History Month, the Hopkinsville-Christian County Human Rights Commission is inviting the community to a celebration where they will honor and recognize local women.
The theme of the Commission’s Women’s History Month Celebration this year is woman advocating for equity, diversity, and inclusion. Commission Executive Assistant, Jada Poindexter says they will announce the recipient of the Fannie Bronson Postell Woman on the Year Award as well as the recipients of their Women Educating Women Scholarship.
Fannie Bronson Postell was a renowned educator in the region according to Visit Hopkinsville. In 1907 Postell was elected to serve as the superintendent of schools for students of color and she later served as the principal of Attucks High School in Hopkinsville which was a school for Black students.
Poindexter says the Woman of the Year Award will honor a woman or a group of women who have worked to have a positive impact on the community.
The Women Educating Women Scholarship is made up of donated funds from the community. Last year one woman received the scholarship, but this year Poindexter says they plan to have multiple recipients thanks to the community’s generosity.
The scholarship was available to women in the county who have plans for pursuing high education.
During Women’s History Month, Poindexter says it’s not only important to remember the women who have had a positive impact in the past, but to also recognize the women who are having a positive impact now.
The Commission’s Women History Month Celebration is at 6 p.m. on Thursday, March 21 at Milkweed Health & Harmony Emporium and is open to all in the community. Â
