Local fire department shares winter fire prevention tips

As temperatures drop and the holidays roll around, home fires tend to occur more often. To ensure folks stay fire safe this winter, Hopkinsville Fire and EMS Captain Payton Rogers appeared on WHOP to provide some tips.

October was Fire Prevention Month and since then, Rogers says the Hopkinsville Fire Department has been focused on sharing fire prevention and cooking safety tips.

Last year, icy temperatures struck the region and during that time, Rogers says the fire department responded to around eight house fires that were caused by space heaters. Rogers says space heaters should be plugged directly into a wall outlet and be three feet away from any furniture or clothing.

Rogers also emphasized the importance of having working smoke detectors. Those who live within Hopkinsville city limits can call the fire department to have new smoke detectors installed in their home or have the detector’s batteries replaced.

The fire department can be contacted at 270-890-1400 and fire prevention tips are available on the department’s Facebook page, Hopkinsville Fire/EMS.
