First place in the girls’ District 8 soccer standings was on the line Saturday morning when University Heights and Hopkinsville got together at the Stadium of Champions.
After nearly 30 minutes of physical, scoreless play, the Lady Blazers’ Kendall Hancock finally found the back of the net and led Heights to a 6-1 win.
UHA then added another goal by Skylar Cantrell with less than 2:00 left in the first half and Gracie Ausenbaugh added a third goal in the opening two minutes of the second half as the Lady Blazers built a 3-0 lead.
Cantrell added her second goal of the game at the 29:51 mark of the second half to run the score to 4-0 and Hancock got her second goal of the game a few minutes later to make it 5-0.
Hoptown’s Azaa Enkhtugs got around her defender and found the back of the net to cut the lead to 5-1. However, Hancock scored off a corner kick late in the match for the final.
UHA improves to 5-0 overall and 1-0 in district play while Hoptown is now 4-3 overall and 1-1 in the district.
Both teams are back in action Tuesday with UHA at Lyon County and Hopkinsville goes to Princeton to take on Caldwell County.
