Governor Andy Beshear announced that Kentuckians can now download a Kentucky Mobile ID, a secure digital version of a standard or REAL ID driverās license or state identification card.
The voluntary Mobile ID is accepted at Transportation Security Administration checkpoints for air travel at more than 250 airports nationwide, including major airports across Kentucky. However, a physical driverās license or ID must still be carried at all times.
Beshear says Mobile ID gives Kentuckians more options when traveling while protecting their personal information, and is another step Team Kentucky is taking to improve safety, convenience and security for families.
Kentucky Mobile ID is securely stored on a userās smartphone and protected by the deviceās PIN, Touch ID or Face ID. Unlike a physical ID, the digital credential remains locked if a phone is lost or stolen. The Mobile ID is verified through the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet using existing driver licensing records and allows users to share only the information required during identity verification.
Kentuckians with a state-issued driverās license, permit or ID card may request a Mobile ID through the app. Those who later upgrade to a REAL ID will see their updated status reflected digitally before their physical card arrives. Federal REAL ID enforcement began May 7, 2025, requiring an accepted REAL ID-compliant credential for commercial air travel.
Kentuckyās Mobile ID is accepted at TSA checkpoints at airports including Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport, Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport, Blue Grass Airport in Lexington and Barkley Regional Airport in Paducah. Not all businesses or agencies accept Mobile ID and state law requires drivers to present a physical license during traffic stops.
