Judge grants ankle monitor release for assault suspect

First-degree assault suspect, Yoandi Perez, appeared in Christian Circuit Court on Wednesday where the judge allowed him to be rereleased on an ankle monitor.

Perez was arrested in late July for reportedly assaulting a man with a machete in Oak Grove. Perez is currently in custody after he planned to violate the terms of his release. His defense attorney, Sands Chewning, says Perez was planning to leave the county and has since been in custody for six to eight weeks.

Chewning refiled the motion to allow Perez to be released while his case is pending. Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney Mark Gilbert opposes Perez’s release, but says he also opposed the initial release which was approved regardless.

Circuit Judge Andrew Self approved Chewning’s motion to release Perez on ankle monitor. Self says Perez is not allowed to leave the county or have any contact with the victim.

Perez will reappear in court on December 4.
