Hoptown rallies in 2nd half to topple Storm

The Hopkinsville Tigers placed five players in double figures and rallied in the second half to defeat visiting Hopkins County Central 80-76 Tuesday night in a boys’ high school basketball game.

The Storm hit five 3-pointers in the first quarter and grabbed a 22-15 advantage. Hoptown (11-7) spent the rest of the half stalking the visitors and drew within 39-37 at halftime.

Jayon Bass led the Tigers’ second-half rally as he scored 17 of his game-high 20 points as he helped give Hoptown a 61-59 lead entering the fourth quarter.

Hopkinsville was able to hold on for the win knocking down some crucial free throws down the stretch.

Jonovan Leavell had 19 points and James Bradley Jr. added 16. Hoptown also got 11 points from TayShaun Quarles and 10 from Jayven Battle.

Hopkinsville is back in action Thursday night at home against University Heights Academy in their Hall of Fame game. The school’s fifth athletic hall of fame class will be introduced before the key District 8 game. Airtime is set for around 5:35 p.m. on Newsradio 99.3 FM and 1230 AM WHOP.
