Hopkinsville Solid Waste provides trash disposal, holiday updates

Newly selected Hopkinsville Solid Waste Enterprise General Manager Bryan Silver and Commercial Supervisor Phillip Coleman appeared on WHOP News on Monday and talked about waste pick up and plans for the holidays.

Silver joined HSW in 2020 as the Landfill Manager and Operator and served in that position until April 2024 when he was selected to serve as the interim general manager. In September, Silver was chosen to serve as the new general manager of HSW.

Silver says he is happy to be serving the community and there’s a lot of work that goes into waste collection. Each day, HSW collects around 200 tons of waste and last year they collected over 50,000 tons of waste. HSW’s current landfill was expected to remain for the next 20 year, but because of the influx of waste, Silver says they may have five to seven years until they need to look into their disposal options.

Concerning waste drop off, Silver says folks with garbage that needs to be disposed can be dropped off at HSW at 5665 Mt. Zoar/Latham Road. HSW can not dispose of anything flammable such as batteries.

As autumn continues, Silver says leaf pick up has been a top priority of theirs and they are working on pick up in zone 6 which includes portions of west Hopkinsville. The leaves that are collected will be converted to mulch.

There are 15 leaf collection zones in Hopkinsville and those who want their leaves collected can place them along the curb and ensure that they are not obstructing traffic. Leaf collection updates are available at hopkinsvilleky.us.

Turning toward waste collection, at a recent Hopkinsville City Council meeting, members approved a waste collection service. Silver shared that the collection service is for contractors and landlords and prices range from $75 to $275 depending on the load size.

With Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years approaching, Silver says there won’t be any trash pick ups on the holidays so during those weeks they will be a day behind and pick-up routes will be concluded on those Saturdays.

Further concerning the holidays, Silver says for the first time ever HSW will have a parade float in the Hopkinsville Electric System Night-time Christmas parade set for 5:15 p.m. on December 14.
