Hopkins Co. Health Department warns of Giardia outbreak

The Hopkins County Health Department is warning the public about an ongoing Giardia outbreak in the county as of Monday.

Giardia is a parasite that, when swallowed, makes its way through the intestinal tract, causing upset stomach and diarrhea. According to the Hopkins County Health Department, it can be found in water sources such as lakes, pools or streams, and can be picked up from unwashed hands that have handled food or other surfaces after using the bathroom.

There have been 23 cases of Giardia in the county in the last month.

At this time, there is no conclusive evidence on a source for the outbreak, but the epidemiology nurses with the health department are working with the state regional epidemiologist and the state epidemiology department to see if a source can be found.

In the meantime, citizens are urged to avoid drinking water from lakes, rivers or streams—avoid getting water from those sources in your mouth at all—wash your hands every time you use the restroom or change a diaper, or have contact with animals or soil. Practice safe food preparation and wash all fruits and vegetables thoroughly.
