Homelessness growing topic of concern in Hopkinsville

It can no longer be denied—Hopkinsville is witnessing a surge in the homeless population, and officials are trying to brainstorm what can be done to help both those individuals and the city as a whole.

Appearing on WHOP recently, Hopkinsville Mayor J.R. Knight says the Hopkinsville Police Department has increased patrols on the Greenway System, where it’s been reported that unhoused individuals have been setting up camp in an attempt to be out of the elements. Mayor Knight says that’s just a temporary fix however, as the homelessness crisis continues.

He says it’s a problem that’s affecting cities across the nation, but he’s responsibility is to Hopkinsville, and as more folks make their way to the city, they’re having to try and face the issue head on.

Mayor Knight says they want to help the individuals who want help or who are in crisis, and they want to handle the problem responsibly and legally.

Meetings and committees have been held in the past to try and come up with a solution, but there’s no denying this is a complicated problem that doesn’t have a clear-cut answer.

Storm debris clean-up continues across the city, and although the mayor hopes to be caught up on the clean-up soon, they know how it goes—once you think you’re done, more debris crops up.
