Highway 41 back open to traffic following train derailment clean up in Todd County

After nearly a week of clean up following the derailment of a train on December 30, Highway 41 between Pembroke and Trenton is back open to traffic as of Monday afternoon.

This comes as the result of multiple agencies working together, including Todd County Emergency Management, CSX, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, Trenton Fire Department, Elkton Fire Department and numerous others, who have been working to clean up debris, stabilize the site and clean sediment from the roadway. A final inspection was conducted Monday, and when the road was determined to be safe for traffic, it was reopened to traffic.

While the roadway is fully open, motorists are encouraged to use caution when traveling through the area due to ongoing monitoring and residual activity associated with the incident.

In a news release, officials thanked residents, commuters, and local businesses for their cooperation and patience during this extended closure, after 31 train cars became derailed last Tuesday. No one was injured in the incident that spilled molten sulfur in the area, which has successful been cleaned up.
