University Heights Academy scored twice in the first 15 minutes and then held off visiting Greenwood 4-3 in a girls’ high school soccer match Monday night.
Gracie Ausenbaugh scored off an assist from Kendall Hancock less than 8 minutes into the match and then Hancock padded the lead to 2-0 on a rebounded shot less than 7 minutes later.
Hancock finished the night with three goals and an assist to pace the Lady Blazers (1-0). Audrey Perry had a pair of assists for UHA, which led 2-1 at halftime.
Alyssa Grise also added an assist and Madison Williams recorded 11 saves in goal for the Lady Blazers, who are scheduled to open District 8 play Aug. 19 at home against Fort Campbell.
In boys’ soccer from Monday night:
University Heights Academy traveled to Madisonville-North Hopkins to open the season. The Maroons grabbed a 5-1 victory.
The Blazers return to action Thursday at home against Paducah Tilghman.
Meanwhile, Hopkinsville traveled to take on Murray, one of the favorites to win the Region 1 championship.
The host Tigers looked the part, defeating Hoptown 8-0.
Hopkinsville is scheduled to return to play Wednesday night at home against Fort Campbell in the District 8 opener for both schools.
