Defense, commonwealth prepare for motion hearing concerning 2021 double-murder case

Anthony Gaines appeared in Christian Circuit Court on Monday where another pretrial conference was scheduled to allow the judge to make decisions concerning multiple motions.

Gaine was arrested in connection to the shooting deaths of Kierra Wallace and George Gomez near Peach Street in 2021. He is charged with two counts of murder, first-degree robbery, first-degree burglary, possession of a handgun by a convicted felon, tampering with physical evidence and four counts of wanton endangerment. Gaines is represented by Brandi Jones and Michael Coleman.

Since appearing in court in June, Jones says they have filed multiple trial related motions. She plans to file another motion and requested that all of the motions be discussed at a pretrial conference on September 29. Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney Greg Cortese agreed to Jones’ conditions which will also give him time to review and respond to those motions.

Among the motions filed is an evidence suppression request and a motion to exclude the death penalty.

The trial has not been rescheduled, but Jones says she’ll have a better idea of when they will be ready after the September hearing. Self brought up scheduling the trial in July 2026, but that will be determined following the upcoming motion hearing.

In May, Gaines rejected a deal that would have resulted in him serving around 40 years behind bars. Now that his case is going to trial, the death penalty is on the table.
