Cross country teams, runners take aim at KHSAA State Championship Saturday

Several local high school cross-country teams and individual runners will be heading to Lexington today to prepare for tomorrow’s KHSAA State Cross Country Meet at the Kentucky Horse Park.

Christian County’s boys’ team is in the state meet for the first time in 16 years after taking fifth last week at the Class 3-A, Region 1 meet at Marshall County.

The Colonels are led by Wyatt Fleming and Michael Webb. Others racing for Christian County include Rex Taggart, JT Miles, Bryce Hamlin, and Joseph Parker.

The boys’ Class 3-A race starts at 10:45 a.m.

In the girls’ Class 3-A race, Christian County will be represented by Taylor Morris, fresh off an 11th-place finish in last week’s region meet. The girls’ race is scheduled to start at 10 a.m.

In Class 2-A, the Hopkinsville Lady Tigers are eyeing a top-five finish after taking second last week in the Region 1 meet.

Hoptown is led by a trio of runners including Lauren Mayes, Alexis Herrera-Loveto, Kaydon Coats, and Rebecca Wood. But Evelyn Bangart also has been making big improvements in her personal times the last few weeks and took 13th overall last weekend at the region meet.

Other Lady Tigers running include Amerah Acree and LuAnna Acree.

The girls’ Class 2-A meet is scheduled to start at 12:30 p.m.

Meanwhile, the boys’ Class 2-A meet is set for a 1:15 p.m. start. Hopkinsville’s Tyson Cavinder is the lone local runner in the race. The Hoptown senior finished seventh at the regional meet last week.

The Class 1-A boys’ meet is scheduled to start at 3:45 p.m. UHA is coming off a third-place finish in the Class 1-A, Region 1 meet last week and is led by senior Cole Glover.

Other Blazers running in the state meet include Jude Finch, Ronan Croney-Sallie, Graham Conrad, Garrett Bowling, Zech Davis, and Scar Venable.

HCA will be represented by Aaron Hensley in the boys’ meet.

In the girls’ Class 1-A girls’ race at 3 p.m., UHA will be represented by Molly Cavinder and HCA’s Genna Calhoun will be the lone Lady Warrior in the race.
