Crittenden Co. sheriff’s deputy dies from injuries sustained in the line of duty

The sheriff’s deputy that was badly injured in an incident in Crittenden County has passed away from his injuries.

Crittenden County Rick Coyle has been in the hospital since April 2, where he’s been receiving treatment after being struck by gunfire during an incident on KY 365 in Sturgis. During that exchange of gunfire, Deputy Coyle was shot and the suspect, 60-year-old Ronnie Phillips, was shot and killed.

The incident came about as deputies were attempting to serve emergency guardianship paperwork at the residence where Phillips was. A female was safely removed from the residence.

In an update on on Thursday, the Crittenden County Sheriff’s Department confirmed that Deputy Coyle passed away from his injuries. They say he served with them for two years as the School Resource Officer for Crittenden County High School, and before that, he was with the Chicago Police Department for 28 years.

They ask that everyone continue to respect the privacy of Deputy Coyle’s family as they grieve this profound loss.
