Colonels’ Montes signs baseball letter with Freed-Hardeman

Christian County High School baseball player Gage Montes is a man of few words. He prefers to let his arm and his bat speak for him.

On Friday afternoon, the senior right-hander did just that. He signed a college baseball scholarship with Freed-Hardeman University in Henderson, Tenn., in front of his family, teammates, and coaches at the high school media center.

Montes battled injuries most of his junior season, but said physical therapy over the summer had helped him get healthy. During a showcase event a few months ago, Freed-Hardeman coaches spotted him and offered him a scholarship.

He said after visiting the campus, he knew it was the right place for him.

Montes has played varsity for the Colonels since the seventh grade. He broke out his freshman season when he hit .319 with 25 RBI and went 4-3 with a 4.44 ERA on the mound.

Despite playing most of his junior year with an injury, Montes went 1-3 with a 2.63 ERA and hit .244 with 18 RBI while moving over from third base to shortstop.

Colonels’ Head Coach Cole Isom said Montes’ willingness to play injured at shortstop helped the team and is the reason he will do well at the next level.

For his career, Montes has 66 RBI and has a pitching record of 10-14.
