Clean-up operations continue in Trenton this morning, and will likely continue for at least the remainder of the week, following a multi-train car derailment Tuesday.
Thirty-one train cars went off the rails about a mile out from the Trenton community in Todd County, and a couple of those cars were hauling molten sulfur that spilled and caught fire. That was cleaned up and extinguished, and following clean air quality tests, the shelter-in-place order that had been issued was able to be lifted.
Now, crews have made steady progress to get everything cleaned up and back on track. CSX has heavy equipment on site and is actively removing derailed railcars and other debris. Officials are anticipating an accelerated timeline for the overall removal and site restoration process.
Motorists looking to travel down Highway 41 are encouraged to continue seeking alternate routes, as it will likely remain closed for some time to safely accommodate first responders and clean-up crews.
No injuries were reported in the initial derailment.
