Clarksville’s late rally clips Colonels in 8 innings

Christian County gave Clarksville all it wanted, but a late-game rally was enough for the visiting Wildcats to slip past the Colonels 4-3 in an eight-inning baseball game Friday night.

The Colonels took a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth as Chase Fort led off with a single and Blake Boehman walked. A wild pitch moved both runners over a base and Gavin Mitchell walked to load the bases. Layton Creamer drove Fort and Boehman home for a 2-1 lead. Mitchell scored on a balk to make it 3-1.

Colonels’ starter Eddie Davis was spectacular for six innings, holding the Wildcats to only five hits. However, he ran into trouble in the top of the seventh inning, walking leadoff batter Dalton Byrd and hitting Anderson McAfee. A Colonels’ error loaded the bases, and Deuce Embrey came in to relieve Davis.

Embrey struck out Jackson Brunner, but Benton Barksdale lined a two-run single into right field to tie the game 3-3.

The Colonels had a chance to win in the bottom of the seventh, but Preston Stokes’ line drive was snagged by second baseman Braxton Weatherford and he flipped to shortstop Kayden Pledger for a double up Rowan Driver to end the threat.

In the top of the eighth, Pledger led off with a walk and came around to score the go-ahead run. Gage Montes threw a player out at the plate and Embrey got a strikeout to get out of another jam.

In the bottom of the eighth, Montes led off with a walk. Fort’s line drive up the middle was snagged by pitcher Mason Stuard snagged it just before it hit dirt and doubled up Montes at first base.

The Colonels still weren’t done as Boehman drew a walk and stole second. He went to third on an errant throw by the catcher. However, Stuard was able to get a strikeout to end the game.

Stuard picked up the pitching win for the Wildcats (27-7) while Embrey suffered the loss.

The loss drops Christian County to 10-11 on the season. The Colonels are scheduled to go to Ohio County on Saturday to play Crittenden County at 10 a.m. and McLean County at noon.
