The Hopkinsville City Council received an annual report from Hopkinsville Electric System (HES), approved annexing a housing development and discussed the survey results concerning earlier meeting times at their Tuesday meeting.
HES General Manager Jeff Hurd says they have replaced all 2,620 defective city streetlights. Many new LED streetlights began to shine in a purple hue overtime as the outer coating began to wear away. The change in hue also caused the lights to be dimmer.
The electric and internet provider also celebrated 25 years of providing broadband internet and serving over 10,000 customers in 2024.
Turning toward ordinances, the council approved a zoning request from Heltsley Farms J&R, LLC concerning land at the southwest corner of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Way and Russellville Road on second reading. The zoning change would split the land into a light industrial district, an agricultural transitional district and an arterial commercial district.
The council also approved an ordinance to annex an unincorporated property known as Barrow Development, LLC into the city. The development is an apartment complex on Lafayette Road and Mayor J.R. Knight says it’s being annexed because the complex is connected to the city sewer system.
At the council’s prior meeting, members discussed possibly moving their meeting times from 6 p.m. to 5 p.m. Knight says the change would save the city $21,000 per year. A survey was made concerning the possible change and Knight says the results show that 65% of residents want meetings to remain at 6 p.m.
The council will discuss the survey results and the possible meeting time change at Thursday’s Committee of the Whole meeting.
