CCSO: Man charged after nearly striking deputies, minors with vehicle

A Hopkinsville man is facing several charges after he allegedly nearly struck four individuals with a vehicle on Wednesday.

According to a news release from the Christian County Sheriff’s Department, deputies were speaking with some youth near a patrol vehicle that was parked with emergency lights activated in the southbound lane of Butler Road.  That’s when a vehicle allegedly sped towards them, narrowly missing the law enforcement cruiser, along with the two deputies and two minors.

The driver of the vehicle—identified as 54-year-old Gerald Rothenburger of Hopkinsville—then allegedly put the vehicle in reverse and made another attempt to pass before he was stopped by deputies. He was allegedly visibly intoxicated.

Rothenburger was arrested and charged with first-degree wanton endangerment, third-offense DUI and reckless driving.
