Candidates for Fiscal Court District 8 talk priorities for the county

The Hopkinsville League of Women Voters continued their candidate forum Thursday with several candidates who are running to serve on Christian County Fiscal Court, and that includes in District 8.

Incumbent Republican Magistrate John Bruce is facing off against Republican Lucas Stagner in May’s primary election, but first, they faced off in debate at the forum hosted at the Hopkinsville Municipal Building. They field many questions, but mostly focused on issues facing northern parts of the county and what can be done to address those said issues.

Both men supported the construction of an EMS facility near Crofton to improve response times for first responders, and Bruce said he would also like to see further expansion of internet services and upkeep on county roads.

Stagner says he would like to see an increase in public safety priorities, agreeing with keeping roads in good shape as well.

Both men also agree that the county needs to see a growth in population, but they advised that the county need ‘controlled’ growth, so we can maintain the vital agriculture that happens in Christian County. Bruce says crop production is explosive in Christian County, providing a vital service for the country as a whole.

Stagner says we certainly need more housing, but we need to grow responsibly in a way that doesn’t accidentally hurt other areas in the county.

With no democratic opponent on the ballot, and if an Independent candidate doesn’t file before that deadline in June, then the magistrate for District 8 will be decided in the May 19th primary.
