Boater safety top priority during 4th of July holiday weekend

The Fourth of July holiday weekend is fast approaching and officials are encouraging safe and sober driving not just on the roads, but also on the water.

The Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources will be increasing their patrols across the state’s waterway as part of “Operation Dry Water”. This campaign is to bring awareness and educate the public about the dangers of boating under the influence and looks to reduce the number of alcohol and drug related accidents and fatalities that occur each year.

Nationwide in 2024, more than 7,000 officers from 485 local, state and federal agencies participated in “Operation Dry Water.” Over the three-days, law enforcement officers contacted 296,190 boaters, made 584 BUI arrests and issued 43,554 citations and warnings for safety violations.
