bell hooks Book Club returns on July 20

The community is invited to take part in the next gathering of the bell hooks Book Club, set to take place on July 20 at the Pennyroyral Area Museum.

According to a news release, this informal group comes together in conversation about Hopkinsville native bell hooks—also known as Gloria Jean Watkins—and her extensive work. She wrote about many things, including feminism, cultural criticism, growing up in Hopkinsville during tumultuous time, family, love and the joy in living.

The book this month is “Salvation: Black People and Love”, a book where hooks makes a call for a cultural return to a love ethic as she explores the legacy of slavery, Black masculinity, the crisis of self-love, and a return to a beloved community.

The group will discuss Chapter 4 “valuing ourselves rightly.” Discussions will continue with subsequent chapters on the third Monday of each month. Copies of “Salvation”are available in The Vault by Planters Bank Museum Shop.
