Attorney General Russell Coleman and Agriculture Commissioner Jonathan Shell object to the previous presidential administration’s dietary recommendation concerning protein.
Coleman and Shell, along with 23 other attorneys general wrote letters to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the U.S. Department of Agriculture opposing the recommendation to list beans, peas and lentils as the best sources of protein and move meat, poultry, and eggs to last on recommended sources of protein.
Coleman and Shell support the argument that animal-based proteins support a healthy diet and that no other food group can offer as much protein in one bit.
Coleman says the previous administration’s politically motivated guidelines is an attack on the Kentucky farm families who produce meat products and he makes it clear he will continue to fight for farm families, like his.
Shell commented on the matter: “The push to reduce red meat consumption ignores both the science of its nutritional benefits and the economic impact on rural communities. We need balanced, science-based dietary guidelines that support consumer choice, protect our farmers and recognize the essential role beef plays in a healthy diet. I will continue to stand with Kentucky’s farm families to ensure their voices are heard.”
