Hopkinsville man facing assault, strangulation charges

A Hopkinsville man is facing assault charges after he allegedly attacked a woman at a residence on Waddell Circle early Tuesday morning.

According to the report from the Hopkinsville Police Department, officers responded to the 100 block of Waddell Circle for reports of an active assault. Upon arrival, contact was made with the victim, who was in distress and had visible injuries. She reportedly told officers that she believed the suspect, 32-year-old Blake Smothers of Hopkinsville, had used drugs and then become paranoid, acting erratically.

That’s when he allegedly assaulted her by striking her, throwing her to the ground, stomping her ribs and chest and strangling her.

The victim reportedly had visible bruising on her ribs, arms, neck, legs, face, chest and shoulders—due to the nature of the injuries, she was transported to Jennie Stuart Medical Center for further treatment.

Smothers was found at a location on North Legion Circle and taken into custody. He’s charged with second-degree assault and first-degree strangulation.
