The Hopkinsville High School boys’ track team are waking up as the Class 2-A, Region 1 champions this morning.
The Tigers grabbed the region title Tuesday night at Jack D. Rose Stadium in Murray in their final season before consolidation next year with Christian County High School.Â
According to a report in the Murray Ledger and Times, the Tigers edged Paducah Tilghman 138-123 to take the championship. Both teams advance to the Class 2-A State Championship next week in Lexington.
Keyshun Teal earned a pair of region titles in the 110-meter hurdles and the 300-meter hurdles. Teal ran a blistering time of 14.9 seconds to win the 110. Tigers’ teammate Kayden Humphrey was second in 16.06. Teal’s time wasn’t far off the state record of 13.76 seconds set by Bryan Station’s Isaiah McCall in 2017.
Teal ran the 300-meter hurdles in a time of 41.60 seconds. Humphrey was third in 44.0.
James Bradley Jr., picked up a region title in the 100-meter dash. The senior edged teammate Willie Ennels to the finish line in a time of 11.50 seconds. Ennels crossed in 11.58 seconds.
Jaylen Ray also picked up a region championship in the long jump. Ray had a leap of 20-feet, 9.5 inches.
Two Tigers’ relay teams also earned gold medals.
The 200-meter relay team won in a time of 1:32.01 and the 800-meter relay team were regional champions with a time of 8:35.27.
The Tigers’ 400-meter relay team also qualified for the state meet by taking second place in 3:38.06
Meanwhile, the Lady Tigers took home a runner-up finish in the girls’ Class 2-A, Region 1 Meet.
Calloway County won 14 of 18 available events and claimed its sixth straight girls’ regional title with 218 points. Hoptown was second with 89 and also will be heading to Lexington next week.
Alanni Quarles was the lone regional champion for the Lady Tigers. She picked her her title in the 400-meter dash in a time of 1:02.29. Quarles edged teammate Grace Cansler to the finish line. Cansler was second in 1:02.44.
Senior Lauren Mayes earned a region runner-up finish in the 3,200-meter run in 11:59.38.
Leaunna Wilkerson finished second in the 100-meter hurdles in 52.55 seconds.
The Lady Tigers’ 200- and 400-meter relay teams also finished as regional runner-ups.
The Class 2-A Track and Field State Championships are scheduled for May 22 at the University of Kentucky in Lexington.
