Several local players will be in action tonight when the girls’ and boys’ Region 2 Tennis Tournament resumes at Ruff Park.
The girls’ tournament was postponed due to weather on Tuesday and the event was postponed nearly an hour due to weather concerns on Wednesday.
Once play started, Christian County’s doubles team of Addison Renshaw and Emerson Boyd pulled off an upset to reach the quarterfinals. The Lady Colonels’ team was seeded 14 but knocked off the third seed from Fort Campbell of Eliana Bowmen and Mahe Moreau 6-3, 6-6, 8-6. Renshaw/Boyd are scheduled to play 11th seeded Armour/Adams from Hopkinsville Central in the quarterfinals.
Christian County’s other doubles team of Molly Cansler/Addison Peck were defeated in the second round 4-6, 6-1, 10-6 by Henderson County’s Olivia Carr/Tori Morris.
University Heights Academy’s team of Georgia Gray and Alyssa Grise fell in the first round to Fort Campbell’s Grace Stultz/Abigail Allen 6-3, 6-3.
Heritage Christian Academy’s doubles team of Emily Orten/Susan Weiss dropped a first-round match 6-0, 6-0 to Webster County’s Jaelyn Rakestraw/Miley McDowell. The second doubles team from HCA of Ruthie Chaudoin/Claudia Hasert fell to Webster’s second team of Ella Rakestraw/Caila Clary 6-0, 6-0 in the second round.
In girls’ singles play, UHA’s Allie Sandifer is into the quarterfinals after she beat Fort Campbell’s Olivia Volkel 6-1, 6-0. Sandifer, the No. 5 seed, will take on No. 4 Paisley Hooks of Caldwell County in the quarterfinals.
The Lady Blazers’ Brooklyn Chesnut barely missed qualifying for the quarterfinals. She won her opening match 6-0, 6-1 over Lyon County’s Kassidy Knott but dropped her second-round match to Webster County’s Josie Cardwell 6-3, 6-1.
Hopkinsville’s top seed Chiani Leak won her second-round match over Webster’s Leah Herron 1-6, 6-3, 10-7. However, the No. 8 seed lost to top seed Kiley Demoss of Madisonville 6-0, 6-0 in the quarterfinals.
Christian County’s Ashlea Russell advanced to the second round with a hard-fought 6-1, 3-6, 10-3 victory over Hopkinsville’s Evelyn Bangart. However, Russell’s season came to an end in the second round with a 6-1, 6-1 loss to No. 3 seed Ashtyn Agnew of Henderson County.
The Lady Colonels’ Lacey Paige won her first-round match over HCA’s Brooklyn Wisdom 6-2, 6-3, but ran into a buzz-saw with the top seeded Demoss 6-0, 6-0 in the second round.
HCA’s Autumn Keaton also picked up a regional win, knocking off Fort Campbell’s Sophie Schaub 6-0, 6-1 in the first round. However, Keaton was knocked out of the tournament by sixth seed Ella Johnson, of Caldwell County 6-0, 6-2.
Meanwhile, University Heights Academy’s Stephen Whitecotton knows his Boys’ Region 2 Tennis Tournament semifinal opponent after Wednesday night.
Henderson County’s Jaxton Duncan defeated Hopkins County Central’s Sebastian Villanueva 6-0, 6-0 to advance. The other semifinal tonight will feature top seed Simone Amadoria of Fort Campbell against Madisonville’s Caleb Tagg.
The girls’ quarterfinals, semifinals, and finals will be played tonight and the boys’ semifinals and finals will be played tonight beginning at 5 p.m.
All players making the semifinal round will qualify for the Sectional Tournament May 20 at South Warren High School.
