Flags to be lowered to half-staff in honor of Ky. soldier killed in Iranian conflict

The governor is calling for all flags at state buildings be lowered to half-staff on Friday, in honor of a Kentucky soldier who lost his life during recent fighting in Iran.

A Glendale native, 26-year-old Sergeant Benjamin N. Pennington of the 1st Space Battalion, 1st Space Brigade out of Fort Carson, Colorado, was killed while supporting Operation Epic Fury. He died from injuries sustained on March 1st during an enemy attack at Price Sultan Air Base in Saudi Arabia.

A memorial service for Pennington, who was posthumously promoted to staff sergeant, was held at Central Hardin High School Saturday. Internment of Pennington’s remains at Kentucky Veterans Cemetery Central in Radcliff will take place in a private ceremony.

Along with state offices, individuals, businesses and other organizations are invited to join on this tribute by lowering their own flags to half-staff on Friday.
