Hopkinsville Police Chief Jason Newby is joining, law enforcement leaders across the state to support House Bill 299, which would establish a state-level ban of Glock switches.
Newby appeared on WHOP Monday morning, and shared that is set to travel to Frankfort to testify for the ban of Glock switches. Glock switches are small attachments that fits onto a handgun and converts it from a semi-automatic to a fully automatic firearm with the ability to shoot 1,200 round per minute.
A federal law already bans Glock switches, but Newby says that ban does not apply to state prosecuted cases.
Without a state-level Glock switch ban, Newby says the only thing police officers can do is seize the devices. He also shared that last year, Kentucky had the second-most Glock switch seizures, following Texas.
Under HB 299 those possessing a machine gun conversion device can be charged with a Class C felony.
