A measure that Representative Walker Thomas has been working on for some time will have its day in the House, after House Bill 293 passed out of committee this week.
That bill would make it so that vehicles operating on a highway with an iron, steel or wooden wheel must be equipped with a rubberized strip on the portion of the wheel that is making contact with the road surface. Vehicles drawn by animals with a gross weight of one ton or less used solely for the transportation of persons would be exempt from this requirement.
House Bill 293 passed from the House Standing Committee on Transportation, with the goal of protecting Kentucky roads from damage. Violators would be fined between $20 to $100 for each offense.
Representative Thomas says, “In my district, vehicles with iron, steel, and wooden wheels are digging grooves into our roads, posing a real danger to drivers. Our ultimate goal with this legislation is to take a proactive step to protect our roads from damage and keep drivers safe.”
It now heads to the full House for consideration.
