Local HRC invites community to MLK Day march, celebration

The third Monday of January marks Martin Luther King Jr. Day each year. To honor his legacy, the Hopkinsville-Christian County Human Rights Commission is inviting the community to its annual MLK Day March and celebration on January 19.

The theme of this year’s celebration is “Building Community, Uniting a Nation.” The march will start at Freedom Elementary School at 9 a.m. and will conclude at Hopkinsville Community College. Commission Executive Director Raychel Farmer says they are hoping for good weather.

Farmer says Tom Bell State Farm is sponsoring the school challenge, where the school with the most participants will receive a prize and a traveling trophy. Once the march concludes at the community college, the program will begin in the Auditorium Building shortly after, and Farmer says Reverend Joe Leavell will be the keynote speaker.

Farmer says they are excited to honor King with the march and celebration, and says a lot of the work the commission does aligns with his principles.
