Little River Audubon Society gears up for annual bird count

Members of the Little River Audubon Society are preparing to travel around Christian County for Sunday’s annual bird count.

Irene Grace is a member of the local Audubon Society, and she says on Sunday, members will be divided into groups and will be responsible for counting and identifying birds within a seven-mile radius of the center of Hopkinsville.

Grace says the bird count provides insight into the well-being of local bird species. Then, the bird count information collected is submitted to the National Audubon Society, which hosts a database concerning bird populations across the country.

If this year’s bird count shows population decreases, Grace says they will then explore ways to restore bird habitats to hopefully increase the population.

Local Audubon Society members will have signs in their vehicles letting other motorists know that the vehicle may slow down or stop to count birds.
